Test & Tag Course Q & A

Answers to some common questions about our test and tag training course

Q  After completing the course, will I be qualified to do test and tagging?
A There is no formal qualification or license required in Victoriato perform test and tagging . The course delivers the theoretical and practical skills required to help you become a competent person as defined in the Standard AS/NZS 3760. After that, all you need to do is build up some experience.

Q Do I need some form of electrical training or knowledge before doing the course?
A No. If you have some understanding of basic electrical circuit theory it would help but we go through this in the first session.

Q Why do I need to purchase a copy of the Standard AS/NZS 3760 prior to attending the course?  Other courses don’t require this.
A As part of meeting the criteria of a competent person, you must have an understanding of the application and requirements of the Standard AS/NZS 3760 (as clearly stated in the Standard).  During the course we will guide you through a number of key clauses contained in the Standard and help you understand how to correctly interpret and apply them so you can become a competent person.
Please note the Standard is a copyright protected document, therefore course providers can not legally provide you with copies or “extracts” of the Standard.

Q Do I get a certificate & license number on completion?
A We issue a certificate of completion only. In Victoria there is no formal registration process for people who test and tag.

Q Once I have done the course, how much will I need to spend on equipment to test and tag my appliances?
A It will depend on the type of appliances you expect to test and tag and the volumes involved.
For small volumes of appliances of a basic design, it could vary from a few hundred dollars for a digital multi-meter (DMM) to under a $1,000 for a semi-automated tester (PAT) .
For more complex appliances and larger volumes you could go up to $9,000 for a full kit with a fully automated PAT, tag printer, data storage, software, RCD tester etc.
Whilst a dedicated RCD tester is a good idea, many modern PATs have an RCD tester incorporated into their design.
As part of the course, we discuss some options for you based on what you expect to be doing.

Q Once I have done the course, can I test and tag other peoples appliances?
A Yes, provided you adhere to the requirements of AS/NZS 3760 and meet the definition of a competent person.
Keep in mind that when providing services to other people etc, you will be taking on a number of responsibilities and obligations, including some legal liabilities.
Also, you must make yourself fully aware of any local legislation and regulations, Codes of Practice etc that may apply in your State or Territory or for some industries.
